Did you know that a female gorilla's gestation period is 9 months just like a human?
Gorillas use tools and can figure things out. One gorilla even learned how to communicate through sign language. Didn't I tell you they are intelligent?
Gorilla's are also very social. They need other gorillas in order to be happy. They groom each other and teach their young how to survive. The male silver back is in charge of their family group, which is called a troop.
Gorillas walk on their knuckles. They rarely stand upright or walk on their feet for very long, usually only a few steps or so. Why, because their body's are made differently than humans. Their feet have a type of thumb which is used to help them grip onto branches to climb trees.
Below is another gorilla who had recently given birth. Here, our little female is nursing.
Just like human mothers, the gorilla mom will hold her newborn infant in her arms and cradle its head until they are strong enough to hold it up on their own. During this time, she will have to climb using one hand.
After a couple of months, mom will let baby ride on her back and she will have the use of both hands to climb. See photo below.
